Is it permissibible for the one who has debts to perform Hajj? Shaykh Mashoor Hasan

Is it permissible for one who has debts to perform Hajj?
Answer
One who has debts can make Hajj after asking the person they owe money permission to do so. If they accept, they can perform Hajj but if not, then the creditor has more right to the wealth that they would spend in order to go for Hajj. However, in this case, Hajj is not obligatory upon this individual as they are not [deemed] capable of doing so but if they are given permission and they go, this is good.
Bakr bin Abdillah al-Muzani, the illustrious tabiee used to make Hajj despite the fact that he has outstanding debts. When asked about this, he used to respond by saying, “The prophet sall Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said, ‘Perform Umrah and Hajj consecutively, for they stop destitution”. So, o poor person, if you want to be better off, perform Hajj and Umrah consecutively, and this is a treasure none know of except those who have tried it. Bakr bin Abdillah al-Muzani used to say, “With my Hajj, I hope for wealth and happiness.”
